what is
preventative conservation?
museums and galleries
are readily associated with restoration and conservation work, usually
referenced to bsi 5454. in recent times though, the emphasis has shifted
toward a more pro-active policy . It involves the investigation of all
known and possible sources of deterioration and damage to collections;
to establish a level of control over, and if possible eliminate them.
although museums will spend large amounts of time and resources pursuing
this policy (then go to some lengths in effecting solutions),not all of
these practices are inpractical for the average user. there are certain
common sense measures you could carry out today, aside from others you
might consider for the longer term. given the recent dramatic rise in
the value & perception of Irish art such measures become more appropriate
daily.
while conditions such as acidity, humidity and daylight are the most frequently
addressed there are others which collectors should be aware of. a short leaflet
has been prepared as a response f.a.q.’s of client’s may be forwarded
upon request.
we are also happy to advise on hanging & security issues at your home
or business.
